What makes Reitz Football special to you?
from Herb Lovelace, Class of '65, Louisville, Ky.: Back in 1962 or so my Louisville team was ranked #1 in the state. We had size (linebackers 250 and above), speed (quarterback and backfield were state champs in 800 relay), and an unheard of 60 players on the football team. We played New Albany in about the fourth game and barely won by one touchdown. We then read where a team call Reitz from Evansville, Ind. killed New Albany 30 to 7 and played their subs the whole second half. We all wondered what type of team and football factory this place was. It also stated in the article that they brought 100 players to the game and over 3,000 fans. Thank God we didn't have to play them.
After college, I moved to Evansville and worked with a former Reitz player. I asked if I could go see a game with him. I'll never forget the feeling after seeing the bowl and the noise of the crowd as the team came out on the field. If our little high school in Louisville had anything even close to that support we would have won the state that year. Well I was hooked. Since 1972 I've probably only missed 20 or so games. I've been frozen, got soaked, burned up and none of it mattered; I was at a Reitz game enjoying one of the greatest high school traditions in America. Win or lose you should all be proud of being a part of this unique experience.
