I was a senior back in 1998. That year we had many problems but in my opinion the biggest was that we never really came together as a team. For the better part of the season this was the case, until Sept. 18. It was a cold rainy night at Enlow Field. We were playing Memorial which was dominating us in the first half. A few minutes before halftime lightning came into the area and forced us to delay the game and retreat to the locker room to lick our wounds. I believe at that point we were down 19 to 0. Coach Gaddis and Elliott were extremely angry for good reason. They new what this group was capable of if all the crap was put aside. We listened and took the scolding in stride. Next came the worst feeling that I have ever experienced when Coach Nau stood to speak. He had never really got on our case. He would give us a hard time every now and then but he never really chewed our butts. That night something snapped and he let loose. We were told that we had no heart and how we didn't care about Reitz or it tradition. This went on for several minutes and it stung the same as getting punched in the face. In fact that may have been a better alternative. Now we all had a tremendous amount of respect for Coach Nau and we all took his words to heart. We came out and for at least one half we put it all aside and came together to put together the greatest comeback that I have ever been a part of. We won that game 28-19. Memorial didn't score the rest of the game. I don't think that at that moment anyone could have played with us. I grew up on the hill but that was the night that I learned what the Reitz Football tradition was all about. It is something that I carried with me everywhere i've been and have tried to show my son what it is all about.
